Noted by legendary film critic Roger Ebert as one of his top ten favorite films of all time, this masterpiece from Oscar-nominated director Werner Herzog is an unforgettable portrait of madness and power.

In the mid-16th century, after annihilating the Incan empire, Gonzalo Pizarro (Allejandro Repulles) leads his army of conquistadors over the Andes into the heart of the most savage environment on earth in search of the fabled City of Gold, El Dorado. As the soldiers battle starvation, Indians, the forces of nature, and each other, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), "The Wrath of God," is consumed with visions of conquering all of South America and revolts, leading his own army down a treacherous river on a doomed quest into oblivion.

Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Cesar Awards. Winner of Best Cinematography at the German Film Awards.

"To see AGUIRRE for the first time is to discover a genuine masterpiece. It is overwhelming, spellbinding; at first dreamlike, and then hallucinatory." Danny Peary, Cult Movies

Wild flick. Sense of realism.

This is not the first time I have questioned Ebert's tastes in films, and Kinski couldn't have over acted more it if he changed his name to AL Pachino.

P.S. There is a film about making Aguirre. Suggesting that be made available on Kanopy.

The Burden of Dreams is available on Kanopy, but a library needs to have it in their catalogue. All you need to do is ask a librarian how you'd go about requesting that they get it and give an explanation relating to film's educational value to whoever it is managing the library's electronic ...Read more

A shocking and brilliant delve into the madness of humanity and the frightening jungle of the unknown. The cinematography is amazing in this influential classic.

I must be missing something..... There is nothing in this movie that appeals to me except, perhaps, the photography.

Unlike most "adventure" films, this one could not be staged. One cannot tame butterflies, mice, monkeys, wild rivers. The camera crew and the actors shared an adventure...this time a true one.

This movie requires a bit of patience and attention, but it is a very rewarding experience. Werner Hertzog filmed this 40+ years ago and has since done every kind of story even becoming an accomplished documentary filmmaker.

Absolutely. Horrendous. Is this the new "Emperor's New Clothes"? We all can see that this movie is bad...right? Why is no one shouting "Yo that man doesn't have any clothes on" AKA "this movie has no substance and includes a scene of a momma mouse DEVOURING HER BABIES and a horse BEING PUSHED ...Read more

Not everything is for everyone. You can dislike or hate a film and someone else could love it.
It’s a matter of taste and because you don’t like it, doesn’t make it bad, it only makes it your opinion!

A powerful film that certainly comes as no surprise to be an inspiration to directors like Francis Ford Coppola when working on Apocalypse Now. Werner Herzog is a master of cinema who still makes memorable films to this day, but his partnership with Klaus Kinski is one that will be remembered ...Read more

A powerful film about an often forgotten era of history. The Peruvian landscape is devastating and while this movie is no comedy, it's certainly a fish-out-of-water story. Despite being 45 years old it's certainly still worth a visit.
