Thank you for opening my eyes. I had no idea about the statics of deaf children. My prayers that these children will be helped more.

Heart breaking film but I was very uncomfortable with it. Surely the behaviour of the worker is a poor example of how to actually help this family. There was just something so manipulative about the whole thing I wonder if it does more harm than good...I am not, nor never have been, in this ...Read more

Hi Pamela,
I'm having trouble following you. Could you explain how you see the social worker as not helping the family in a way that is effective? And wrt your comment about this being manipulative, are you referring to the film and could you explain why you think this is doing more ...Read more

This film is areal true example of denial, families who are not willing to get therapy/help for adult conflicts that spill onto children and how selfish parents with all the privileges in the world can be to "make there child Normal" to fit their own needs, the bond between the "worker" as ...Read more

This is a beautifully shot and acted film, but also extremely manipulative. The social worker undermines the family in a way that is cynically crafted and hopefully doesn't reflect the efforts of people who work tirelessly to help children and their families who deal with such disabilities. ...Read more

Loved it. Sign language should be a universal language

What a beautiful film-I was moved to tears. I've always been interested in learning sign language but have only picked up a few words here and there. I will definitely register in an ASL class next semester.

Wow, I was moved to tears. My uncle was deaf. My grandparents (in the 1920's) were poor immigrants yet progressive enough to enter my uncle into a boarding school for the deaf. He was able to live a full life speaking, lip reading and signing. Lovingly, most of his siblings learned sign ...Read more

Nice film. Poor quality captions/subtitles too. Loads of information available on web. Approximately 15% of population in all Western nations are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (some form of hearing loss affecting daily living)

In US this means over 36 Million US citizens are Deaf or Hard of ...Read more

Very well done short film.

Two important messages:

1. Love your children UNCONDITIONALLY.
2. Never, ever, diminish the importance of a life because of a "disability" - offer all that is available to elevate, encourage and succeed.

Outstanding short. Drives home potential positive impact professional help can have with special needs children. Also the lasting isolation that can occur without adequate family understanding and support.

Beautiful film! I'm hard of hearing I was able do okay with mainstream but socially I was isolated. Sign language is so important for all don't deny access to sign language it will open up their world.

Been looking at studying sign language and am even more inspired now. I hope this is widely viewed and that people will take time to understand what it might be like to be hearing impaired, or vision impaired, for that matter. Take not for granted your own gifts of intact senses if you have ...Read more

Heart breaking film demonstrating that ignorance and misinformation can have life-long consequences, either by being able to participate in the world or be a lonely observer.

As someone studying to become a Special Educator, it breaks my heart to see this type of abuse against children who are perfectly capable of achieving so much, but who are denied the resources they desperately need because people who don't understand their disability or condition *think* they ...Read more

This is a powerful short with incredible acting performances. While the film addresses the experiences of a deaf young girl as she prepares to enter school for the first time, THE SILENT CHILD is also about family dynamics, harmful pride and it's origins in deep-seated insecurity, and the ...Read more
